When my children were small we spent many delightful hours reading children's books and I still have a huge collection of them. One of my favorites has always been Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli.
This book tells the story of Mr. Hatch, a lonely and miserable man who follows the same joyless routine every single day as he goes to work, shops at the market and eats his meals alone. One day Mr. Hatch receives a surprise gift in the mail: a heart-shaped box of chocolates with a tag that says only "Somebody loves you ..."
A miraculous transformation begins to take place as Mr. Hatch searches for the identity of the person who loves him. Could it be a neighbor or co-worker? Mr. Hatch smiles at everyone he encounters because he isn't sure who is his secret admirer. He begins to say hello to people and show kindness to strangers, all because he knows he is loved. I won't spoil the ending of the story of the story for you, but le's just say that Mr. Hatch's entire life was changed because of one small gift of love.
It's really that simple to change the world!
This year I'm traveling over Valentine's Day so I can't be with the one I love. But I've found a way to celebrate the holiday anyway. I've purchased a number of gift cards from a restaurant near my hotel and labelled them with these words: "For YOU! From Someone who loves you!" Now as I walk down the streets of this city today I will have a lovely Valentine for each homeless person I encounter. This promises to be the best Valentine's Day ever!
Love is all around! Can you feel it? If not, just stop for a moment and remember that Somebody loves YOU! Have a happy day today!
